Webinar Recap: Designing for Launch – Building Spaceports for Performance and Growth

As commercial space continues its rapid evolution, spaceports are becoming far more than places where rockets launch. They are emerging as integrated ecosystems that support manufacturing, research, transportation, workforce development, and regional economic growth.

During this Global Spaceport Alliance webinar, moderated by Stephanie Wheeler of BRPH, leaders from BRPH, Alaska Aerospace, the Virginia Commercial Space Flight Authority, and the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast explored what it takes to design and operate spaceports that can meet today’s launch demands while remaining adaptable for tomorrow’s opportunities.

The discussion highlighted that successful spaceports begin with thoughtful master planning. Decisions about utilities, transportation, land use, and shared infrastructure made today will determine how efficiently facilities can expand as launch cadence increases and new technologies emerge. Panelists emphasized designing flexible infrastructure that allows future upgrades without disrupting operations.

Another key theme was that launch capability alone is no longer enough. Modern spaceports must create an environment that attracts aerospace companies through reliable infrastructure, streamlined operations, available workforce, and strong regional partnerships. Communities that invest in industrial development, education, and quality of life position themselves to become long-term centers of aerospace innovation rather than simply launch locations.

Workforce development was identified as one of the industry’s greatest priorities. From K-12 STEM initiatives and technical education programs to university partnerships and internships, panelists shared examples of how their organizations are building the talent pipeline needed to support the next generation of commercial space activity.

The conversation also explored infrastructure as a competitive advantage. Investments in resilient utilities, transportation networks, power, ready-to-build sites, and shared facilities not only improve operational efficiency but also accelerate economic development by reducing barriers for companies looking to establish operations.

Throughout the webinar, one message remained consistent: the future of successful spaceports lies in balancing operational excellence with long-term vision. By combining strategic planning, resilient infrastructure, public-private collaboration, and workforce investment, spaceports are positioning themselves as essential drivers of the growing global space economy.
