Spaceports are often classified in two ways: where they are located and how they launch vehicles. Some are built along coastlines, inland, or on the water to take advantage of geography and infrastructure. Others are defined by the way launch vehicles reach space through either horizontal or vertical launch systems.

Many spaceports combine these characteristics. For example, a coastal spaceport may support vertical launches, while an inland facility could be designed for horizontal launch operations. Together, these approaches create a diverse global network that supports commercial, civil, research, and defense missions.
